Forecast: More fog, Tuesday snow for some

What a difference sunshine can make, as evidenced by the graph below showing today’s temperature trace (yellow) as compared to yesterday’s (blue). It was nice to see our nearest star again. Your weather timeline takes you into a cloudier and slightly cooler Sunday.

Clouds and fog look to move back in tonight and into Sunday. We may see a few scattered sprinkles or some drizzle Sunday as a weak area of low pressure moves across the state.

Our attention then turns to Monday. The morning looks dry for most, but a trough of low pressure kicks off rain in the afternoon. Shown below are the GRAF computer model (upper right), which brings Monday’s system on a more southern path, giving areas along a south of I-80 rain and ending it Monday evening. The larger image below is from the trusty European computer model, which moves the system along a more northerly path and brings light snow into parts of western and central Iowa. Hopefully things will clear up tomorrow as to which forecast path is more likely. In any event, we could have slippery conditions for the Tuesday morning commute in some areas.

Turning to temperatures, lows tonight do fall to the freezing mark and below in the north and northwest, so watch for slick spots there as fog may deposit on surfaces. The next 6 days’ highs follow, with a chillier trend into the new year.

As we look at the extended forecasts below, it appears likely that a big change to colder temperatures will come at the end of next weekend. It may also be accompanied by accumulating snow as the U.S. Hazards graphic below suggests. We’ll keep you informed.
