Friday Jan. 3 was senior day for Waverly-Shell Rock’s men’s wrestling team, and the team celebrated each of their five seniors before battling the 16th-ranked Bondurant-Farrar Blue Jays.
Those five seniors included Alex Hornyak (120 pounds), Ryker Graff (138 pounds), Bas Diaz (157 pounds), Ethan Bibler (165 pounds), and Zander Wedemeier (190 pounds). Each of the senior wrestlers are at least two-time state tournament qualifiers, with Diaz, also a two-time state champion, and Hornyak having qualified in each year they have been in high school.
There is certainly a lot to be celebrated for each of these wrestlers individually. However, perhaps their greatest accomplishment has been as a team. Over their time, these seniors have been a part of three dual team championships and two traditional tournament championships…
