NYC weather: Snow predicted to fall an inch per hour before tapering off early Monday morning

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Forecasters could be given credit this time as winter weather moved into the area late Sunday afternoon, with a “wintry mix” followed a few hours later by proper snow, coating sidewalks and covering cars as temperatures began to dip into the low 30s.

Sunday evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a special weather statement warning that moderate to heavy snow was expected to fall before 9 p.m. with snowfall rates predicted to approach nearly one inch per hour and visibility expected to be reduced to a quarter mile to half a mile at times.
