Celia Jiménez here, thinking about how much libraries have evolved over the years.

For many of you, this might not feel like something new. But for me, someone who grew up in a tiny rural town in Mexico and only visited my town’s and school’s libraries, seeing all the adds-ons at local libraries today makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop. Sometimes I am still adjusting; while visiting Southern California recently, I told my sister to shush my youngest niece, who was having a blast playing at the library—libraries aren’t as silent as they once were.

My interest in writing this story began after reading a story in the Weekly’s Eat+Drink section, of all places, about a new collection of cooking utensils Pacific Grove Public Library has for checkout…
