Halloween beach bash, “Library Cat” and an outdoor movie : The Week Ahead

This week starts with a “trunk-or-treat” events, celebrates “Library Cat” at Carthage College and ends with an outdoor movie in a park:

Sunday, Oct. 20

Bark if you love Halloween: The Simmons Island Beach House is hosting a “Howl-o-ween Bash” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today on Simmons Island beach. The party features a vegan Champagne brunch, plant-based food and craft vendors and live music at 11 a.m. with fiddler Georgia Rae. At noon is the Pet Costume Parade and Contest. If your adorable pet is ready to join the parade, sign up at the Simmons Island Beach House Facebook page.

Art in a park: The final 2024 Kenosha ArtMarket is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in Union Park, 4500 Seventh Ave. The market features original fine art, along with jewelry, pottery and other items, and live music.

Monday, Oct. 21

Boo to you: A lot of Halloween haunts are only open on weekends, but Kenosha’s own Dr. Destruction scares folks seven days a week in October at the Jerry Smith Farm in Somers. His “Haunted Manor” is open daily through Oct. 30. Admission is $15, cash only. It’s open 4-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Library party: Carthage College’s Hedberg Library is hosting an evening of Halloween family fun, 5-7 p.m. Monday. There will be trick-or-treating, carnival games and a book reading with author Aaron Hunter. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

Tuesday, Oct. 22

Toy story: The Civil War Museum, 5400 First Ave., is hosting an exhibit showcasing a classic all-American toy. “G.I. Joe: America’s First Action Figure” examines toy soldiers, from the 1860s to the 1960s. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. General admission to the museum, including this exhibit, is free.

Wednesday, Oct. 23

Wild about wombats: Head to the Kenosha Public Museum this morning for Museum Munchkins. The programs are designed to “get your preschoolers excited about science and the world around them.” Each week, participants learn about a different museum collection animal through songs, stories and activities. Today’s theme is “wombats,” celebrating the sturdy Australian marsupials. The free program is 9:30-10 a.m. at the museum, 5500 First Ave.

Thursday, Oct. 24

The cat’s meow: The new “Library Cat” art exhibit opens today in Carthage College’s Hedberg Library on the campus, 2001 Alford Park Drive. The 32 cat-related art pieces are placed throughout the library, with visitors encouraged to find them all on a scavenger hunt. The free opening reception is 3:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, complete with cat-themed refreshments like cat cake pops and virgin “cata”-arita cocktails. Here’s a fun bonus: Everyone who finds all cat artwork will receive a Library Cat sticker. The exhibit runs through Dec. 3 and is always free to visit.
