FORT WORTH, Texas — The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning drivers about the dangers of “puffing,” a practice that leaves vehicles vulnerable to theft. “Puffing” refers to leaving a car running, unlocked, and unattended while it warms up, making it an easy target for thieves.Leaving keys in an unattended vehicle is not only a Class C misdemeanor, which can result in a fine of up to $500, but it also significantly increases the risk of theft, according to the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office. The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported that in 2019, 84,131 vehicles were stolen with the keys left inside.
