Fort Worth plans push to amend Texas law letting landowners leave city oversight

Fort Worth officials say they have one primary goal in the upcoming Texas legislative session: preserve the city’s authority to responsibly govern its citizens and property.

What that goal means in concrete terms won’t be entirely clear until state lawmakers convene Jan. 14 for the 89th session of the Texas Legislature.

“As a general policy, we’re just looking to preserve our authority to govern our citizens in our city,” Deputy City Attorney Theresa James said. “That means we will support legislation that is in line with our comprehensive plan or strategic goals, or that benefits the health, safety and welfare of our citizens, or that reduces the cost of governing.”…
