BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — It was announced this week that the City of Bridgeport will accept $24.6 million in federal funding to help construct a new Congress Street Bridge spanning the Pequonnock River.
After opening around 1911, the old bridge served as a streetcar, vehicle and pedestrian bridge for generations. It was closed in 1997, however, after the Connecticut Department of Transportation discovered its substructure was moving.
Despite being on the Connecticut Historical Commission’s list of bridges, the structure was demolished in 2010. Since then, the city and state have been raising millions of dollars for a replacement project…
