Former Columbus police officer sentenced for role in stealing, selling cocaine

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A former Columbus Police officer was sentenced to 46 months in prison for possessing with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.

According to court documents, John Castillo, 32, of Grove City, was assigned to the drug cartel unit while working for CPD. In February 2021, he conspired with another officer, Joel Mefford, to steal and sell approximately 10 kilograms of cocaine.

They took approximately 10 kilograms of cocaine from a house on North Everett Avenue in Columbus and did not turn it into evidence. They also planted two additional kilograms of cocaine for law enforcement to find at the house later that day…
