Police discuss resources available to domestic violence victims

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, more than 10 million people in the United States experience physical abuse from a partner every year and the Springfield Police Department is working to make sure victims of domestic violence in western Massachusetts are aware of the resources available to them.

“Domestic violence calls are, generally, the number one calls our officers respond to year-in and year-out,” said Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh.

Springfield Police said that, in 2023, they responded to more than 8,400 calls for a domestic disturbance. So far in 2024, that number has surpassed 7,000 with more than two months to go. They said that equates to more than 24 calls to a domestic disturbance per day…
