Efforts to preserve the history of Gettysburg

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – As concerns about new development and modernization in Gettysburg grow, the Adams County Historical Society is preserving one building as it is.

The Shriver House was built by a wealthy family in 1860 on Baltimore Street and restored in 1996. The previous museum owners approached the Adams County Historical Society about buying it. New museum director Abbie Hoffman says the building and its guided tours will be kept as is.

The home is used to tell the history of the Battle of Gettysburg through a civilian family. George Shriver enlisted in the Union Army and his family evacuated. The home was taken over by Confederate sharpshooters. Two of them died.
