Wichitans kick off Kwanzaa with 20th annual celebration

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – December 26 marks the first day of Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration of African American culture, and Wichita’s African American Council of Elders is once again leading the community in its observance.

The council hosted its 20th annual Kwanzaa celebration at The Center on Thursday. The event was filled with music and tradition, bringing together people of all ages to enjoy some holiday fun.

Kwanzaa is centered around seven principles, each of which is discussed on a specific day. The principles are symbolized by a set of seven candles — three red, three green and one black. Each candle represents a principle for people to reflect upon throughout the week…
