School officials and students celebrated school board member and educator Velma Barnes on Friday. Barnes, who has held the District 2 seat for 11 years, decided not to seek re-election. A reception was held Friday at New Hope Elementary School honoring Barnes, who spent nearly two decades as an educator there.

“I have been blessed with one of the best boards in the world,” Barnes told those in attendance. “We work together.”

David Batts, unaffiliated, won the District 2 seat against Andressia Ramirez, a Democrat, during November’s general election. Batts will be sworn in during the December school board meeting…
