Over 100 Macy’s employees in Sacramento County to be laid off as 2 local stores close

More than 100 workers will be laid off when two Sacramento-area Macy’s locations close, according to notices filed with the state, as the retailer looks to shutter struggling department stores.

The company confirmed last week that Sacramento’s longtime downtown Macy’s location, which has served as an anchor for the Downtown Commons since 1963, was slated for closure, along with a store at the Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights. According to the notices, 71 people work at the downtown location, and 61 work at the Citrus Heights store.

The company was under pressure to improve profitability and take advantage of its significant real estate holdings. The Sacramento County stores are two of 66 that the company has identified as set for closure nationwide…
