N.Y. weather: Will February bring a respite from the cold?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City residents are facing frigid temperatures that truly embody the heart of winter in what is yet another round of Arctic air seeping southward into the U.S.

The influence the polar vortex has had so far this year is not to be overlooked. While below-average conditions are forecast to persist in parts of downstate New York through the end of January, the latest outlook for February shows a shift in conditions.

According to the latest monthly outlook by the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, February will revert the monthly climate pattern to one which characterized much of 2024 — above-average temperatures.
