Creative Classroom Contest winner giving students hands-on science and math lessons

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – WKBN’s second Creative Classroom Contest winner is Margaret Halverstadt, who teaches fourth- and fifth-grade math and science at the Youngstown Academy of Excellence.

Halverstadt plans to use the $500 she won to promote hands-on learning through the use of STEM kits. The kits include building materials, coding games and experimental tools that she said students will use to develop critical thinking and teamwork skills.

In addition to STEM kits, Halverstadt plans to invest $100 in math manipulatives — hands-on tools such as fraction tiles and geometric shapes to help them visualize mathematical concepts…
