Alleged South American theft ring hits ATMs across California, prosecutors say

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — To call it a simple “bank robbery” would not properly describe the alleged criminal ring now facing charges in federal court.

The story of these robberies actually moves from Chile to California. It takes a path from Los Angeles to Modesto, Sacramento, Shasta County, the states of Texas and Oregon.

KCRA 3 first reported the existence of a so-called “South American Theft Group” last month. Now, as the criminal complaint has been unredacted and 11 people have been indicted in federal court, the intricate details of this theft ring are being revealed.

Starting in May 2024 and continuing until October, ATMs throughout the state of California had not just been broken into, they had been systematically cut open, quickly and professionally. It would involve heavy equipment, multiple Airbnb rentals, and an underground car ring, prosecutors said…
