1 Killed, 3 Hurt as Severe Thunderstorm Strikes Kansas State Park

A severe thunderstorm in Russell County, Kansas, resulted in the death of one man and injuries to three others, according to Sheriff Andrew Van Der Wege. The storm, which occurred at Lake Wilson in Wilson State Park, central Kansas, brought winds between 68 and 70 miles per hour, causing multiple campers to topple.

The sheriff’s office began receiving emergency calls just before midnight on Wednesday. Responding officers discovered several overturned campers and conducted search and rescue operations, finding three people injured and one man deceased. The deceased, identified as 64-year-old Christopher Montoya from Holyrood, was found in the Hell Creek Park area and his body has been sent to a local mortuary for an autopsy.

The injured were transported to Russell Regional Hospital, though details of their conditions remain undisclosed. Following the storm, the sheriff’s office has issued a warning to potential visitors of Lake Wilson to exercise caution due to debris and power outages.

The incident is part of a series of severe storms and flooding affecting the Midwest in recent days.
