Grim Discovery in Jalisco
Mexican authorities have uncovered the bodies of five decapitated men on a road in the western state of Jalisco. The grisly find is the latest in a series of violent incidents plaguing the country.
Bodies Found in Black Bags
The bodies were found in black plastic bags on the outskirts of Ojuelos, a municipality in northeastern Jalisco. Officials discovered the headless bodies of five men wearing only pants.
Heads Found Nearby
Near the bodies, authorities found another bag containing what appeared to be the victims’ heads. Forensic scientists are currently combing the area for evidence.
Scene of Violence
Ojuelos borders the city of Lagos de Moreno, which has been the site of numerous gruesome killings linked to organized crime. The most notorious case involved the disappearance and murder of five young people in 2023.
Jalisco Cartel Blamed
The violence in Jalisco is primarily attributed to the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal groups. The cartel is known for producing and smuggling fentanyl into the United States.
Reward for Cartel Leader
The U.S. government has offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of CJNG leader Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho.”
Violence Across Mexico
Mexico has experienced a surge in violence since the government deployed the army to combat drug trafficking in 2006. Over 450,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands have gone missing.
Mayors Targeted
Last week, the mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, was beheaded less than a week after taking office. Four other mayors have since requested federal protection.

Mexico’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, faces the daunting task of addressing cartel violence. She has vowed to continue her predecessor’s “hugs not bullets” strategy, which focuses on social policy to combat crime.
