**NEW YORK** — An 8-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in Queens on Thursday, leading to a police-involved shooting where the suspected assailant was killed, according to the New York City Police Department.

Authorities indicated that the stabbing appeared to be linked to a family dispute, though specific details remained sparse. Police mentioned that the 20-year-old male suspect and the young victim might have been brothers or step-brothers, but their identities have not been disclosed.

The violent incident unfolded inside an apartment on 94th Avenue in the Jamaica area of Queens. At approximately 5:20 p.m., a 29-year-old woman with a stab wound in her back exited the building, seeking assistance from MTA Police down the street, concurrently with a 911 call made by the building’s security office.

Responding swiftly, police arrived within three minutes and ascended to a fifth-floor apartment, following information from a witness. Upon entry, they encountered the suspect threatening his own 43-year-old father with a knife to his throat in a hostage-like situation.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell described the tense scene, where the suspect ignored multiple demands to drop the weapon. An officer subsequently shot him once. The suspect was provided immediate medical aid but later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

A baby, only 8 months old, was also present in the apartment during the ordeal but was found safe and unharmed.

Chief Chell praised the officers’ rapid actions under pressure, stating, “This is a reminder of the risks New York City police officers face and the quick, life-saving decisions they must make.”

The shooting was recorded on body cameras worn by the officers involved.

Both the 29-year-old woman and the 43-year-old man who were injured during the incident received hospital treatment and are expected to recover.

Police are continuing their investigation into the tragic events.
