A 13-year-old boy was apprehended on Thursday after attempting to enter Roosevelt Elementary School in Wisconsin.
Armed with a backpack and duffel bag, the boy was stopped by school staff who confronted him. He managed to flee the scene but was later taken into custody.
The boy, a former student at the school, was not allowed entry through multiple doors. When he approached the main entrance, he was buzzed into a vestibule area where staff confronted him. He became nervous and left.
“Our office staff was heroic,” said school superintendent Jeffrey Weiss. “They helped prevent a disaster.”
Police identified the suspect through community tips and confirmed that he was armed with a firearm. They believe he had no legitimate reason to enter the school.
During a press conference, police presented a video showing the suspect with a gun. They also revealed that he had researched school shootings online and made concerning comments to classmates.
The incident occurred in Kenosha, Wisconsin, located about 40 miles south of Milwaukee.
