California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in response to an outbreak of H5N1, commonly known as bird flu, among dairy cows in Southern California.
The virus has previously been detected in cattle in 16 other states. While no human cases have been reported in California, infections have been linked to contact with infected animals.
Limited Risk to Public Health
According to the California Department of Public Health, the risk to the general public remains low. However, the state is taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus, including increased testing and monitoring.
First Human Case in Louisiana
On the same day as the California emergency declaration, the CDC confirmed the first human case of severe bird flu in Louisiana. The patient is currently in isolation and receiving treatment.
