Chiles Appeals Olympic Bronze in Swiss Court

Jordan Chiles’ Bronze Medal Dispute Continues

Jordan Chiles’ fight for her Olympic bronze medal in floor exercise is ongoing. Her attorneys have appealed to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, arguing that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling that removed her from the podium was unfair.

Chiles’ appeal alleges that her "right to be heard" was violated because CAS refused to consider new evidence that her inquiry was submitted on time. They also claim that the hearing was unfair due to a conflict of interest involving the arbitration panel president.

The dispute stems from a scoring error in the floor exercise final. Chiles’ coaches challenged the judges’ evaluation, resulting in her being awarded an additional 0.10 points. However, CAS ruled that the inquiry was submitted four seconds late, disqualifying her from the bronze.

Chiles’ appeal marks a rare step, as CAS is typically the final arbiter in sports disputes. The Swiss tribunal usually only overturns CAS decisions in cases of procedural violations or incompatibility with Swiss law.

The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has criticized CAS’ handling of the case and has provided a letter of support for Chiles’ appeal. USA Gymnastics has also expressed support and will continue to work with her legal team.

Chiles has stated that her fight is not solely about the medal but about justice and peace. She maintains that she was penalized through no fault of her own and deserves to have her rightful victory recognized.
