House Unveils Bill to Prevent Government Shutdown

House leaders have released a proposal to keep the government funded until December 20th, avoiding a shutdown at the end of this month. The legislation will include:

  • $231 Million for Secret Service: This additional funding will support the agency’s efforts to protect presidential candidates during the 2024 election.
  • Replenishment of FEMA Funds: The bill also provides funds to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized that a government shutdown before the election would be unwise.

Agreement Reached after Failed Attempt

The announcement follows the failure of a previous funding plan that included a controversial voting requirement. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had opposed a shutdown, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed satisfaction with the new agreement, which avoids "poison pills."

Bipartisan Support

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries indicated that Democrats will review the legislation. Senator Schumer, while criticizing Johnson’s earlier proposals, expressed hope for bipartisan cooperation to pass the funding bill by the September 30th deadline.
