Los Angeles Braces for Severe Windstorm
A potentially devastating windstorm is expected to hit the Los Angeles area Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The storm is predicted to be the strongest in over a decade.
Damaging winds are anticipated across most of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, causing widespread power outages. Gusts could reach up to 80 mph, with isolated areas in the mountains and foothills experiencing gusts of 80-100 mph.
Flights to and from LAX may be delayed due to dangerous mountain waves. Airlines and pilots are advised to avoid flying near terrain during the storm.
The high winds and low humidity pose a significant fire hazard. The National Weather Service expects to issue Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Fire Weather Warnings.
Residents are urged to stay indoors and away from windows, as the storm has the potential to topple trees and down power lines. A similar windstorm in 2011 caused widespread damage and power outages.
While the winds are forecast to diminish by Wednesday evening, a renewed threat of strong winds is expected on Friday.
