Dominican Republic Seizes Massive Cocaine Shipment

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have confiscated nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine from a banana shipment at the country’s largest seaport. The drugs were hidden inside a shipment from Guatemala that was bound for Belgium. The seizure is worth an estimated $250 million.

Ten suspects have been detained in connection with the incident.

This is not the first major drug seizure by Dominican authorities. In 2024, the country seized nearly 47 tons of drugs, including a 660-pound stash found on a boat near Puerto Rico.

The Dominican Republic is a known drug transit point. The Caucedo port, where the latest seizure occurred, has been the site of several large drug busts in the past. In 2006, officials seized more than 5,680 pounds of cocaine at the port, which was the largest seizure on record at the time.
