Additional Coverage:

Hurricane Helene’s Devastating Impact

North Carolina remains in the grips of Hurricane Helene’s aftermath, with 92 people still missing. The storm has claimed 95 lives in the state, contributing to a total death toll of over 230 across the Southeast.

Misinformation Hampers Recovery

Governor Roy Cooper expressed concern over widespread misinformation surrounding recovery efforts. He urged individuals to refrain from spreading false claims that aid is not reaching affected areas, as it demoralizes those working to provide assistance.

Threats Against FEMA Workers

Cooper condemned threats made against FEMA workers in North Carolina. In one incident, a man was arrested for threatening to harm agency personnel. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell temporarily suspended canvassing in some areas to ensure the safety of her team.

Voting Sites Open Despite Damage

Despite the storm’s impact, all but four of North Carolina’s early voting sites will be operational. In Buncombe County, which was heavily affected, 10 sites will be open instead of the planned 14. Voting may be impacted at sites without electricity or plumbing, but the state is working to ensure all eligible voters can participate.

Nonpartisan Recovery and Election Efforts

Brinson Bell, Executive Director of the State Board of Elections, emphasized the nonpartisan nature of recovery and election efforts. She condemned threats made against election workers and urged citizens to focus on voting and avoiding harmful rhetoric.
