Georgia Coach’s Father Passes Away

The father of Georgia coach Kirby Smart, Sonny Smart, passed away on Saturday due to complications from hip surgery. He had fallen in New Orleans ahead of the Sugar Bowl.

Sonny Smart was a former high school football coach in Alabama and Georgia. He fell and fractured his hip on New Year’s Eve. He was hospitalized and underwent surgery but passed away surrounded by family.

Kirby Smart’s family was in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, which was postponed due to a tragic incident in the French Quarter. Georgia lost to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinal.

Sonny Smart had been unable to attend the 2023 national title game due to health issues. He had been a regular at his son’s games since Kirby became head coach at Georgia in 2016.

The Smart family thanked the medical staff for their care and asked for prayers for those affected by the New Year’s Day tragedy. They also expressed their gratitude for the thoughts and prayers they have received.
