Government Shutdown Averted

Additional Coverage:

Washington lawmakers have reached an agreement to fund the government through December, avoiding a potential shutdown on October 1.

The deal includes only essential funding to keep federal agencies running and postpones a decision on future spending until after the November election.

House Speaker Mike Johnson described the measure as "bare bones," saying a government shutdown so close to the election would be politically unwise.

Negotiations were hampered by partisan politics, with a GOP-backed plan to link government funding to voter ID requirements failing due to opposition from some Republicans.

The stop-gap plan also allocates additional funds for the Secret Service, disaster relief, and the upcoming presidential transition.

Democratic leaders have praised the bipartisan deal, which they say is free from partisan provisions and is expected to pass quickly.
