Hurricane Helene Death Toll Rises

Additional Coverage:

Hurricane Helene has left a trail of devastation across five southeastern states. The storm made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing torrential rain and high winds.

At least 64 people have died in the affected states. Millions remain without power, and roads are underwater. Cell coverage is spotty, and other essential services have been disrupted.

Parts of South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia have been particularly hard-hit. The death toll is expected to rise as officials continue to search for victims.

In Florida, at least 11 people have died, including nine in Pinellas County. All of the deceased were in evacuation zones.

Fifteen people have been killed in Georgia, including an emergency worker. At least 11 storm-related deaths have occurred in North Carolina, where flooding has been described as "biblical."

Two people died in South Carolina when trees fell on their homes. At least one person has died in a traffic collision on a flooded road.

Two volunteer firefighters are also among the dead. In Virginia, one person was killed when a tree fell on a home near Roanoke.

Local officials are struggling to locate victims due to poor cell coverage. All roads in western North Carolina have been closed to all but emergency vehicles.
