Japan Boosts Nuclear and Renewable Energy

Additional Coverage:

Japan’s New Energy Plan

A government panel has recommended a shift in Japan’s energy policy. The plan aims to boost renewable energy to 40-50% of electricity needs by 2040, while increasing nuclear power’s share to 20%.

Nuclear Power Revival

This policy reversal seeks to meet growing energy demand in the face of decarbonization targets. The plan calls for maximizing nuclear power use, despite concerns raised after the 2011 Fukushima disaster. The government believes it must balance energy security and emissions reductions.

Renewables and Next-Generation Energy

Renewable energy, including solar and wind, will be the primary power source, while the government plans to invest in next-generation technologies. However, some experts question the feasibility of the 2040 targets and the lack of a roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels.

Nuclear Reactor Restarts

To meet the 20% nuclear power target, all operational reactors must be restarted and new ones built. Currently, only 14 reactors are in service, and the pace of safety checks poses a challenge to reaching the target.

Advanced Reactors and Spent Fuel

Despite skepticism, Japan continues to pursue advanced reactor development and a nuclear fuel reprocessing program to achieve a complete nuclear fuel cycle.
