Kenyan Man Convicted in 9/11-Style Attack Plot
A Kenyan man, Cholo Abdi Abdullah, has been found guilty of plotting a terrorist attack on a U.S. building similar to the 9/11 attacks. The plot was allegedly carried out on behalf of the terrorist group al-Shabab.
Abdullah represented himself in court and did not actively participate in the trial. Prosecutors presented evidence that he spent years training in explosives and secret operations.
He moved to the Philippines in 2017 and began training as a pilot. Abdullah was arrested in 2019 and transferred to the U.S. in 2020.
According to prosecutors, Abdullah researched how to breach a cockpit door and gather information on the tallest building in a major U.S. city.
Al-Shabab, designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S., is an al Qaeda affiliate that seeks to establish an Islamic state in Somalia based on Shariah law.
