Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the murders of four University of Idaho students, could face the death penalty if convicted. Judge Steven Hippler denied a motion to remove the death penalty as an option.
The prosecution has indicated that they will seek the death penalty. Kohberger’s defense has argued against it, claiming it violates “contemporary standards of decency.” They point to the declining support for capital punishment in the US.
Kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in connection with the November 2022 stabbings. He is eligible for the death penalty in Idaho only if convicted of first-degree murder or conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
