Moscow, Idaho – Prosecutors in the Bryan Kohberger murder case are seeking to introduce a college paper written by the defendant as evidence of his understanding of crime scenes. Kohberger, 30, is charged with the murders of four University of Idaho students – Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves – who were found stabbed to death in their off-campus rental home on November 13, 2022.
The prosecution filed a motion on Monday stating their intent to use Kohberger’s 2020 paper, titled “Crime-scene Scenario Final,” which he wrote while studying at DeSales University in Pennsylvania. The 12-page document reportedly details proper crime scene procedure, including securing the area, obtaining warrants, contacting relevant authorities, and utilizing specialized equipment.
It also delves into evidence collection, contamination prevention, and the importance of witness interviews and surveillance footage. The paper uses a hypothetical scenario involving a female victim and a knife, mirroring details of the Idaho crime.
Kohberger, a criminal justice graduate student at Washington State University at the time of the killings, was arrested in Pennsylvania weeks later. Investigators linked his DNA to genetic material found on a knife sheath recovered at the crime scene.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. If convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
The murders shocked the small town of Moscow, prompting the trial’s relocation to Boise due to concerns about Kohberger receiving a fair trial in the local community. A hearing is scheduled for April 9 to address pretrial motions, including arguments regarding Kohberger’s autism spectrum disorder diagnosis and the admissibility of a 911 call made by two surviving roommates.
The trial is set to begin on August 11. A gag order remains in effect for all parties involved, and cameras will not be permitted in the courtroom.
