Two baby perentie lizards, a species native to Australia, have hatched at the Los Angeles Zoo. It’s the first time the zoo has successfully bred this species.
Perentie lizards are among the world’s largest lizards, second only to the Komodo dragon. They have brown skin with cream or yellow markings.
The baby lizards are currently being cared for off-exhibit and are doing well. They will be introduced to the public at a later date.
The Los Angeles Zoo is one of only three institutions in North America that have successfully bred perentie lizards.
