Last supermoon of 2024 coming soon

Additional Coverage:

Tonight marks the final supermoon of 2024, a series of four consecutive supermoons to end the year.

The “Full Beaver Moon” will be visible on the US East Coast at 4:28 p.m. EST tonight. The name comes from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, as beavers prepare for winter in their lodges around this time of year.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its orbit. The term was adopted in 1979 to describe this phenomenon.

Along with the supermoon, several planets will be visible tonight. Mercury will be visible in the southwest, while Venus will appear shortly after sunset. Saturn will be visible in the south until after midnight, and Jupiter will rise in the east two hours after the supermoon.
