Crowds Gather to Honor Former President Jimmy Carter

On Wednesday, the Capitol basked in sunshine as mourners from across the nation gathered to bid farewell to Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. president who passed away on December 29th at age 100.

Thousands lined up in the frigid temperatures to pay their respects to the former president, who was renowned not only for his service but also for his humanitarian work and Nobel Peace Prize.

Yvonne Berry, who traveled from Maine, hailed Carter as a man of integrity and a dedicated servant leader. Betty Jackson from North Carolina expressed gratitude for Carter’s programs and saw him as an example of integrity.

Virginian Larry Felix, who met every president from Nixon onward, remembered Carter’s warmth and grace. Nanette Ebalo from San Francisco admired Carter’s enduring marriage to Rosalynn, which she believed defined him.

Mourners expressed hope that more leaders would embody Carter’s values, highlighting his compassion, integrity, and commitment to serving others.
