Mexican National Sentenced for Girlfriend’s Murder
A Mexican national living in the United States illegally has been sentenced to 39 years in prison for killing his girlfriend. The crime became a political issue during the presidential race due to the man’s immigration status.
Brandon Ortiz Vite, 26, pleaded guilty to murder and related charges. He expressed remorse and apologized to immigrants for his actions.
Ruby Garcia was found shot dead on the side of a highway after an argument with Ortiz Vite. He shot her in the head, disposed of her body, and fled the scene.
Judge Mark Trusock condemned Ortiz Vite as a “cold-blooded murderer” and a danger to society. Ortiz Vite claimed he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the killing but acknowledged his wrongdoing.
Former President Donald Trump had accused the Biden administration of allowing Ortiz Vite to re-enter the country after his deportation in 2020. It is unclear when he returned to the United States.
A survey of voters showed that immigration was a major concern for Trump supporters on Election Day.
