Weissand, a self-professed dog lover, and Stone, who paired with Aida, a German Shepherd skilled in drug detection, formed strong bonds with their canine counterparts. Weissand worked with Poker, who is trained in bomb detection and protection. Their time together included extensive training and working hours, building a lasting companionship.
Although Stone attempted to initiate adoption paperwork before leaving Japan to secure Aida’s future with him, the separation was inevitable as their duties ended and the dogs remained active in service. However, through the efforts of American Humane, a non-profit dedicated to animal welfare, and a series of donations, the dogs were transported back to the U.S. following their retirement. Their journey involved multiple flights and a car ride, spanning from Okinawa through Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Diego, to North Texas.
The reunion in Tyler, Texas, was an emotional moment for Stone and Weissand. Stone, who has since retired from the Marines, expressed his happiness and relief about starting a new chapter of civilian life with Aida and his family. Meanwhile, Weissand, who is still active in the service and based in San Antonio, looks forward to giving Poker a relaxed lifestyle, focusing on letting him “be a dog.”
