Mass Deportations Price Tag: Billions

Mass Deportation Plan’s Steep Cost and Challenges

Former President Trump’s proposed mass deportation plan would come with a hefty price tag, according to the American Immigration Council. Deporting one million people annually could cost $88 billion and reduce the US GDP by $1.7 trillion.

Tom Homan, former head of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), believes mass deportation is necessary for national security. However, ICE’s current mission focuses on targeted enforcement, prioritizing threats to public safety.

A recent ICE operation in Silver Spring, Maryland, highlighted the challenges of mass deportation. It took over a dozen officers seven hours to arrest six undocumented immigrants with criminal histories.

ICE’s resources would be severely strained by a mass deportation program. Detaining and deporting millions would require a massive increase in manpower and specialized training.

Additionally, many countries, such as Cuba and Venezuela, often refuse to accept deportees. This would further complicate and delay the process.

Trump’s plan lacks a clear blueprint and would likely require significant additional resources, both financial and human. The feasibility and effectiveness of such a large-scale deportation program remain uncertain.
