Maine Couple Found in Woods After Four-Day Search

An elderly couple and their dog went missing while hiking in a wooded area behind their Maine home last Sunday. After an extensive four-day search, the wife, 72-year-old Pamela Helmstadter, was found suffering from severe hypothermia. Tragically, her 82-year-old husband, John, was found deceased nearby.

Pamela was located over a mile from her home, and John was found approximately 200 yards away. The couple’s black lab, Lucy, was also found safe.

According to officials, John suffered a fall and was unable to get up, prompting Pamela to seek help. She became lost in the woods and was unable to find her way back.

Pamela’s core temperature was dangerously low when she was found, but she was alert and able to communicate with rescuers. John’s cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner.

The search for the couple was initiated after they failed to return home on Sunday and were reported missing on Wednesday. Maine Game Wardens and their K9s were involved in the search.

Officials emphasized the importance of being prepared when venturing into the wilderness. They advised against going alone and recommended carrying a cell phone, whistle, or other means of communication in case of emergency.
