Jackson Mayor Pleads Not Guilty in Bribery Case
Jackson, Mississippi’s mayor, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, has pleaded not guilty to federal bribery charges related to a scheme involving a proposed hotel project.
Allegations of Bribery
Federal prosecutors allege that Lumumba, along with District Attorney Jody Owens and former City Council President Aaron Banks, accepted bribes to help developers secure approval for the hotel. The investigation involved undercover FBI employees posing as developers.
Lumumba’s Response
Despite the charges, Lumumba plans to remain in office. He maintains his innocence and says he will continue to fulfill his duties as mayor.
Other Indictments
Owens and Banks have also pleaded not guilty. Owens denies the allegations, calling the investigation flawed. The trial is set for January 6, 2025.
