Northern Taurids Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight

Additional Coverage:

Meteor Shower to Peak this Week

Get ready for a celestial spectacle as the Northern Taurids meteor shower reaches its peak on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Details

The Northern Taurids occur when Earth passes through debris left by Comet Encke. These meteors are visible worldwide except in Antarctica, but they produce only about five meteors per hour.

Viewing Tips

To maximize your chances of seeing the meteors, venture outside after midnight to areas with minimal light pollution. Lie down and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness for at least 30 minutes. Look towards the Taurus constellation in the northeastern sky.

Challenge

Unfortunately, the bright moon may reduce visibility of the meteors. However, their large size and ability to penetrate Earth’s atmosphere make them easier to spot compared to other showers.

Part of a Larger Event

The Northern Taurids are part of the Taurid Swarm, which includes the Southern Taurids that peaked earlier this month. The Taurid showers occur annually from September to December, typically peaking in late October and early November.

Upcoming Meteor Showers

Other meteor showers to look out for in the coming months include the Leonids, Geminids, Ursids, and Quadrantids.
