Tragic News for Southern Resident Killer Whales
A southern resident killer whale named Tahlequah, known for carrying her dead calf for over two weeks in 2018, has again been spotted carrying the body of her newborn. The incident occurred just days after researchers confirmed her recent birth.
Despite excitement over Tahlequah’s birth in December, concerns arose due to the behavior of the calf and mother. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates the calf, identified as J61, survived only a week and has been deceased for several days.
Tahlequah’s behavior is not uncommon among whales, but the extended period she carried her calf in 2018 was unusual. Experts speculate that her individual characteristics may play a role.
Southern resident killer whales, an endangered population, face numerous challenges. Their survival depends on access to salmon, their primary food source. Conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration, dam removal, and sustainable fishery management to support this vulnerable species.
