Rehabilitated Bear Cubs Return to Wild

Additional Coverage:

Wildlife officials released five rehabilitated bear cubs into the wild near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The cubs were orphaned in mid-July near Durango.

One set of three cubs was orphaned when their mother entered a home and was euthanized. The other two cubs were found separately.

The cubs were taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center, where they were raised and socialized with other bears. They were never seen by humans and only fed by automatic devices.

The cubs were released in locations where they are less likely to encounter humans or vehicles. They often den together in the winter and separate in the spring.

Wildlife officials hope the cubs will maintain their fear of humans and thrive in the wild. They believe this rehabilitation program gives the animals a second chance.
