Russia fires nuclear-capable missile at Ukraine

Russia Uses New Missile in Ukraine

Ukrainian investigators are examining the wreckage of a new intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) fired by Russia on the city of Dnipro. This is the first time the weapon has been used in combat.

The missile, called Oreshnik, struck a factory, and the remaining fragments have been shown to the media. It is based on Russia’s RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile.

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the attack and said it was in response to Ukraine using Western-supplied long-range missiles.

Despite claims from Ukraine and Putin that the missile traveled at Mach 10 or higher, US defense officials say it was not hypersonic.

Debt Forgiveness for Russian Recruits

Putin has also signed a law granting debt forgiveness to those who enlist in Russia’s army to fight in Ukraine. This highlights Russia’s need for more military personnel.

The new recruits can write off debts up to 10 million rubles ($96,000). The law applies to debts with court orders for collection issued before December 1, 2024.
