Russia Pays North Korean Troops Low Wages

North Korea May Pocket Pay of Soldiers Fighting in Russia

Reports suggest that North Korea may deploy up to 100,000 troops to aid Russia in its war. South Korean intelligence estimates that Russia is paying each soldier around $2,000 per month.

However, experts believe that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may pocket much of this money. The funds would likely be used to maintain loyalty among the elite and to purchase luxury goods.

Defectors have stated that the average salary in North Korea is less than $1 per month. While the payments from Russia would provide a significant financial boost, it’s unlikely that the soldiers themselves will see much of it.

Instead, the money could be used to purchase military equipment, food, and other goods for the elite. Kim may also use the funds to reward the families of soldiers who are killed in battle.

Despite the potential benefits, the North Korean soldiers face a grim future. Ukraine’s allies have warned that they may become mere “cannon fodder” in the conflict.
