UK Supplies Ukraine with New Air Defense System
The United Kingdom has unveiled the Gravehawk, a new mobile air defense system for Ukraine. The system adapts existing air-to-air missiles for ground launch, providing an affordable and plentiful source of ammunition.
Addressing a Critical Need
Ukraine has faced a shortage of air defense systems to counter Russia’s airstrikes. While advanced systems like Patriot missiles are effective, they are expensive and in limited supply.
Gravehawk’s Advantages
Gravehawk allows Ukraine to use less costly and more accessible missiles, extending the lifespan of its more expensive defense systems. The system also increases the country’s overall air defense assets.
Prototypes and Deployment
Two Gravehawk prototypes have been tested in Ukraine, with 15 more expected this year. The system builds on Ukraine’s existing makeshift air defense system, which has proven effective against drones and exploding drones.
Additional Support
The UK is also providing drones and other equipment to Ukraine. This support aims to bolster Ukraine’s military position and support potential negotiations.
A Timely Demonstration
The need for increased air defenses was highlighted when a Russian drone approached the presidential palace during a UK Prime Minister’s visit to Kyiv. The incident served as a reminder of the constant threats Ukraine faces.
