Ukraine to Get French Jets Capable of Launching Storm Shadow Missiles

Additional Coverage:

France to Send Mirage Jets to Ukraine

France is sending Mirage fighter jets to Ukraine, providing it with another platform to launch Storm Shadow missiles. These missiles have proven effective against Russian targets, including factories and warships.

Storm Shadow Missiles

Ukraine has been using Storm Shadow missiles to fight against Russia’s invasion. The missiles have a range of up to 155 miles and cost almost $1 million each. They were originally provided by the UK and France.

Mirage Jets

The Mirage jets will enable Ukraine to launch Storm Shadow missiles from a higher altitude, increasing their range. The first three jets are expected to arrive in early 2025, but the total number to be sent is unknown.

Restrictions on Missile Use

Ukraine has requested permission to use Storm Shadow missiles to strike targets in Russia, but this request has not yet been granted. The US has a say in the matter because the missiles have an American system onboard.

Advantages of Mirage Jets

General Gordon Davis believes the Mirage jets will provide “added value” for Ukraine. They will increase Ukraine’s ability to use Storm Shadow missiles and offer additional advantages. However, Davis criticizes the delay in sending the jets, which could have been more beneficial if they had been provided sooner.
