U.S., Japan, and Australia to Strengthen Military Cooperation

U.S. Marines will join joint training exercises with Japanese and Australian forces in northern Australia. The move comes amid concerns over China’s aggressive military behavior in the region.

Defense ministers from the three countries expressed alarm over China’s actions in the East and South China seas, including confrontations with Philippine vessels. They condemned unilateral attempts to alter the status quo by force.

The ministers also emphasized the importance of peace across the Taiwan Strait, where China has increased military drills.

Australia’s Prime Minister Marles stated that the training exercises aim to enhance cooperation between the three countries. He dismissed concerns that Beijing would be angered by the move, saying it is about building relationships with allies.

The joint training exercises will begin in 2025, including Exercise Talisman Sabre in Australia and Exercise Orient Shield in Japan.
